Remodeling Do's & Don’ts

Do's

  • Do discuss smoking, eating, and drink acceptance—and violation consequences
  • Do request contractor to provide separate toilet facilities at your expense
  • Do pick paint colors at start of drywall, if not before
  • Do pick hard floor coverings (tile and hardwood) at start of drywall
  • Do provide access to contractor throughout the project, including final inspection
  • Do communicate with contractor weekly on work to be performed
  • Do discuss types of insulation and/or high efficiency HVAC system
  • Do allow your contractor to fully complete all work before moving back in or bringing furniture back into the space

Don'ts

  • Don't purchase fixtures too early and be sure to discuss with contractor what items you are considering
  • Don't bargain with or request work of subcontractors without builder knowledge
  • Don't choose a wood exterior door unless you fully understand maintenance requirements
  • Don't wait too long to decide on cabinet design and appliance placement. Rough "in" subcontractors need drawings and type of appliance(s) when framing is complete. If this information is not provided in a timely manner, extra expense will occur if changes to plumbing and wiring are required.
  • Don't distract or communicate with daily employees unless it is work related
